Overview of what a Music Performance Coach does
A music portfolio coach works closely with musicians, particularly instrumentalists and vocalists, to curate, refine, and expand their portfolio for college admissions. They provide guidance and training to optimize technical abilities within performance and recording and to select, resort and build artistic resumes and portfolios for live auditions and college applications.
Here's an overview of what a music performance and recording coach does:
Professional Development: In addition to performance-oriented skills, offer guidance on career development, such as choosing appropriate repertoire for specific opportunities, networking, and self-promotion.
Program, Resume, and Portfolio Building: Building appropriate artistic resumes for performances or auditions and advising the audio/video recording and mastering process.
Feedback and Evaluation: Provide constructive feedback on musicians' performances, artistic resumes, and portfolios, aid students in identifying areas for improvement. This feedback is essential for building a college admissions profile.
Repertoire Selection: Assists musicians in narrowing down repertoire for live auditions based on instrument genre preferences and skill level. This can include contrasting works from different historical periods, styles, and technicalities.
Performance Preparation: Guide musicians through preparing for performances, competitions, or auditions. This includes addressing stage presence, body language, audience engagement, and practicing effectively.
Audio and Video Recording: Musicians introduced to essential technical knowledge related to amplification, sound systems, and recording gear in a studio or live setting. They are guided on the etiquette and processes of recording sessions, including microphone placement, capturing desired sounds, and the post-production work of editing and audio mastering.
